Setting up Windows Dialup Networking

For troubleshooting information and manual login procedures please click here

Note: These instructions have been developed on a Windows ME system, if you use Windows 2000 or Windows 98/95, your icons may look a little different, and the buttons may be arranged a little differently, but they contain the same functionality.

  1. To begin, locate the "Start" button in the lower left corner and click on it. Locate the "Dialup Networking" entry under "Program:Accessories:Communications" in the start panel:

  2. Next, you should see the Dialup Networking folder, click on "Make New Connection":

  3. You should get the window shown below:

  4. Enter a string to identify your connection, for example "UTHSCSA". If you have more than one modem, select the appropriate modem that you want to use with this connection. You can also make more than one connection to the same ISP system, for example, one with your regular modem, and a second with a wireless cell phone modem:

  5. Click on "Next", and then "Finish" to set up a new icon for the connection to the UTHSCSA Biochemistry Internet Service:

  6. A new icon should appear in your Dialup Networking Folder, called UTHSCSA:

  7. If you want, you can now create a shortcut of this icon by right-clicking on the icon and selecting "Create Shortcut". Once created, you can drag the shortcut to the desktop, so you can easily access it from the main window. Next, right-click on the new icon and select "Properties":

  8. You will get a screen that lets you set the connection parameters:

enter the area code of 210 and the prefix of 567, and one of the suffices given to you by the system administrator for connection to the modem bank. Now click on "Networking" to select the appropriate Internet Transport Protocol. You have 2 choices here: Either use:

Note: Older Windows versions have a button called "Server Type" or similar instead of the "Networking" tab at the bottom of this screen. Select that instead to get to the equivalent screen.

PPP allows you to set up your PC to function as a host on the Internet with valid IP address. This allows you for example to run ftp, telnet, ssh and so forth in both directions, and to connect from the Biochemistry intranet to your computer and from your computer to the Internet. CSLIP can provide this functionality as well, but requires cumbersome configuration options to be set up. CSLIP on the other hand may be slightly faster under certain conditions. For most cases, they are equivalent and PPP might be preferable, since it is slightly more flexible. Below, both connection methods are explained:

    PPP:CSLIP (compressed SLIP):

if you choose PPP, you should also click on "Enable Software compression".

  9. Click on "TCP/IP Settings" and enter an IP address for CSLIP connection (this is not necessary for PPP connections, the IP address will be automatically assigned during the login process), and the DNS nameserver addresses for both PPP or CSLIP connections. You should also have both "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network" selected.

    PPP:CSLIP (compressed SLIP):

  10. Click "OK" and you now select "Scripting" in this screen:

  11. You should get a screen similar to this: Note: Older Windows versions allow you to select the scripting service under the "Server Type" configuration buttons.:

Under "File name", enter "c:\windows\ppp.script" for PPP connections, and "c:\windows\cslip.script" for CSLIP connections. Also select "Start terminal screen minimized". Then click "Edit" and enter the script information. If you do not have an existing script file on your computer, you will get a warning message:

Simply click on "Yes", the Notepad program should open with a blank screen. Copy and paste the appropriate script into the notepad window from the files below:

(to download, right click on the appropriate script, select 'Save As' and save to c:\windows)

Make sure to edit the file to reflect the proper User name and Password. The script file will of course not work unless you put your own information into the fields labelled "your login here" (your login name) and "your password here" (replace with your password):

    PPP:CSLIP (compressed SLIP):

  12. Now save the information under Notepad and click "OK". You are now ready to use your script. Simply click on the dial-up icon and on "Connect" to establish an Internet connection. After you are connected, you can use Netscape, eudora, ftp, telnet, Internet Explorer and so forth directly from your desktop. Happy surfing!
