Dialup Modem Connections

Welcome to the dialup page for the Biochemistry department modem bank. We currently have 3 phone lines that are equipped with US Robotics Sportster modems (33.6 kbps). We offer PPP dialup access to all faculty, staff and students in the Biochemistry department - free of charge.

If you would like to use this service, you need a compatible modem on your home computer and PPP connection software, as well as a user account on the Biochemistry/Bioinformatics BCF server. The service is compatible with Unix, Windows and Macintosh systems. Only PPP service allows you to transport Windows network neighborhood shares and printers, NFS, X-Windows and Appletalk. If you want to set up a webserver/ftp server at home, you will also need to use the PPP service, since it will provide you with a regular Internet IP address.

In order to open an account, please visit the server account signup form . If you had a dialup account in the past, you need to setup another account due to the fact the modems are on a brand new server.

This document will assist you in the steps required for setting up your computer (Windows, Mac and Linux/Unix) to dial into these modems. First, you must decide which dialup method you would prefer.  Below is a list of advantages/disadvantages for each service. If one doesn't work, try the other.
