Ph. D. and M. S. Degrees Awarded

The first M. S. and Ph. D. degrees were awarded in 1973 and 1974, respectively.  Through December, 2002, a total of 91 Ph. D. degrees and 16 M. S. degrees have been awarded.  The mean time to complete the Ph. D. degree has been 5 yr. 4 mo. + 1 yr. 8 mo. (n=91). The mean time to complete the M. S. degree has been 3 yr. 7 mo. + 1 yr. 5 mo. (n=16).  Students contrubuted to an average of 37% of faculty publications and, on average, each student published about 3 papers.    Two of our Ph.D. students have won the Armand J.  Guarino Award for Excellence  in Doctoral Studies, which is awarded  annually to the most outstanding Ph.D. student by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

The majority of our graduates pursue postdoctoral studies before starting positions in academia, industry, or government.  Our graduates have faculty positions at the University of Notre Dame, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, among others.  They have positions in corporations such as Eli Lily, Bristol Myers Squibb, Monsanto, and Amgen and government agencies such as the National Institutes of Health.

A more specific breakdown of the career development of our graduates tabulated through 2002 is as follows:
