Biochemistry/Bioinformatics Server Account Application Page

If you are a member of the Biochemistry Department at UTHSC in San Antonio you can apply for an account on the Biochemistry/Bioinformatics Departmental Unix Servers by filling out the application form below. Currently, we have three separate servers on which you may have an account. Which account(s) you need to apply for depends on the type of service that you require. Please be aware that you, the owner of your data, are responsible for protecting your own data on our server. If you store sensitive data on our server you need to make sure that you protect your data from access by unauthorized users. If you are unsure about what you need to do contact Borries Demeler for a consultation.

The options are:

  1. Biochemistry Server (www.)biochem.uthscsa.edu
E-mail accounts including webmail and pop access, example: user@biochem.uthscsa.edu, departmental web service, PERL and PHP, shell accounts for web pages only. Web service is secure, and all access requires ssh/scp to upload information. ftp and telnet will not be available on this system.

  2. Biochemistry Server (2) (www.)biochem2.uthscsa.edu
This server can be accessed with insecure protocols, such as ftp and telnet. It offers departmental web service, and provides shell accounts for editing web pages. Web service is insecure, and all access can be performed with telnet and ftp. ssh and scp are still available. If desired, any webpage can be synchronized with the secure webserver or linked from the secure webserver. This server is mainly intended to function as a easy access webserver to allow users to update pages with standard protocols (Netscape Publisher, Microsoft Frontpage, ftp, etc). This server also has 80 gb of anonymous ftp storage. Users wishing to provide anonymous ftp server should contact Jeremy Mann (x7-2672) for details.

  3. Firewalled Biochemistry/Bioinformatics Server/GCG Accelrys Software server (www.)bcf.uthscsa.edu, (www.)gcg.uthscsa.edu
This server is intended for all uses not covered on servers (1) and (2). This server will provide shell account access via ssh/scp for all uses including X-windows, applications, compilers, etc. This server also provides access to the Accelrys GCG/SeqWeb/SeqLab software suite. If you plan to connect to the Biochemistry modem bank, you will need an account on this server.

  4. Access to genomics software biodna.uthscsa.edu
Server for Molecular Biology Insights Oligo and DNAStar Lasergene

  5. SGI Molecular Modeling Workstation insight2.biochemistry.uthscsa.edu
You will need an account on this workstation if you plan to use the Insight II molecular modeling software on the SGI console.
